Diabolina Digs
Making my national debut on the NBC Nightly News.

Remember how Mr. NBC made me do a voiceover when we visited 30 Rock?

Well, the story airs this Friday, Jan. 9, 6:30 pm. I will be the voice of a young Bolivian child excited about clean water, thank you very much. One word: TIVO!!!

Gays ;)

The elation of last night's Republican defeat is destroyed today by the victory of Proposition 8 - a Constitutional ban on gay marriage. As night fell, one barrier was broken, only for the harsh light of day to usher in a new one. Ugh.

I am heartbroken. But not completely surprised. After all, it is human nature - an ugly but undeniable part - to seek an "other" to fear and wage war against. The definition of "other" can be based on class, gender, race, religion. Depends who you ask. Now the time has come for sexuality to take center stage. The target may shift but as long as there are human beings there will be targets. Remember, no one of us is "safe."

During his last year of law school, Mr. Diabolina told me that gay rights would be our generation's civil rights movement. I remember how sad his eyes looked when he told me this.

Seven years later, here we are. Bracing ourselves for the battle of our lives.

And make no mistake about it, this will be every American's battle. Whether you are gay or straight, man or woman, minority or majority. If you believe in liberty and justice for all. If your faith teaches you to love your neighbor. If your soul knows it is wrong to deny someone the right to love. Then this is your fight.

This is your opportunity to affect change. This is your chance to save somone from the shadows of marginalization. This is your civic duty - to defeat discrimination.

Gay men and women are not deviants. They are not caricatures. They are not ungodly. They are sons and daughters, mothers and fathers. They are patriots and public servants. They are flesh and blood, mind and spirit. They are just like you or I. Maybe better ;)

They are gifted performers who sparkle with creativity

They are financial wizards who protect us and guide us

They are award-winning journalists who uphold the hallmark of a free society, a free press

They are passionate filmmakers who champion freedom of speech, give a voice to the voiceless.

They are talented architects who build the homes where we build our lives, make memories with our loved ones

They are brilliant TV comedy writers who
entertain us while making us think.

They are burgeoning entrepreneurs trying to make their American dream a reality.

They are magical spirits doing the best they can, living their lives honestly and proudly.

I refuse to hand this innocent little kitty a country that denies law-abiding citizens the right to be who they are.

I don't want to have to explain to this little girl

And this little boy that our generation got it wrong.

Do what you can. Speak out like Sable Crow and WeeMo, donate, march, sign the petition. Please just do something. Lives depend on it.

Having cool chick readers.

Last month, Nololos aka Wizzie emailed me from Kona, Hawaii. She just wanted to let me that she and her BFF Elle "love [me] and to keep the pics and blogs coming...[they] are reading all the way out in Hawaii!" Adore.

Over the ensuing weeks, have found out that Nololos is a fellow thirtysomething curly haired Louis Vuitton fiend. Adore even more.

Last week, she sent me this Dear Diabolina email:

Hey girl,

Still reading the blog and loving it! So I know you are totally busy and everything but I had a question about Forever 21. Me and my girl Elle (the one who got her hair japanese straightened) are flying over to Honolulu on Tues. for a shopping day!!!

This is so big and exciting I feel like I'm gonna pee my pants! So...I have never (gasp!) been inside a F21 store. I've only shopped online. Can you help? Maybe if you have nothing to write about one day (yeah right) you could do a pointers to shopping in this store? A plan of attack? Key items to look for?

Of course we are going to hit the new Nordstroms and Banana and Lucky etc...but what we are most excited about is F21!!Maybe if you don't feel like writing anything...could you...would you...pretty please maybe ask your lovely fab readers what they think?

Is this a totally random question? I just have this one chance over there and don't want to come home with bags of bad choices and spur of the moment horrible ideas.

Thanks girl...if you can't no biggie...just thought it would be cute.I'll get a pic in front of the store if you want!

Aloha,Wizzie (and Elle)

Crazed with getting ready for my business trip, I wrote back this short Dear Diabolina Answer:

V. exciting. Yes, please take a pic and send it.

You are in luck because I've kinda already written some F21 advice most recently in June and also back in April.

Most of all tho beware of what I call The Frenzy. Buy only things you love. Whether expensive or F21. It's the best way to really define your style. And not go broke ;)

kiss,
D

And here's Nololos' "Kona girls in the city" report - it pretty much made my week:

Us in F21! The girls were soooo nice and happy to take our pic. Ok so, Lucky jeans, Fighting Eel tunic, Versace glasses, Louie cammo bag, Roxy wedge flip flops (That's totally for comfort.) Elle had on Jo jeans, Coach bag, Dior glasses, Free people tank and Anthropologie shoes. And her adorable jacket is from jeans warehouse (our version of F21) and was only $9!

We had so much fun. F21 was over the top. we went twice. Once to take it all in and make mental notes and then went back for the kill. I spent only $70 and got a ton of cute things. Stayed mostly in the khaki range so I could add pops of color. Great idea and fun to figure out later today when I go thru my loot!

Please note the fab pearls on Elle and the HUGE statement ring on me. Both found within the first 2 min. when we walked in the brand new Nordstroms. Kinda set the tone.
Also I was channeling Rachel Zoe with the extra large Starbucks. I also (shy voice) tried to make my pose casual like you...I gave you total props btw.

Lunch was sushi an a conveyor belt! We were feeling very "Hills."

One more thing.....I have to mention we were dressed not only for cuteness but knowing we were going to try on a million things. It was a tricky combo but I think we pulled it off. We got to Honolulu at 9 am and flew out at 7 pm and still didn't have enough time! :0

Ugh how much do you love her guest post? I think in addition to being a fashionista and adorable, Nololos may also be a bit of a natural writer :)

Any other readers who want to share successful shopping tales, I am all ears!!! Your emails and comments really brighten up my day. Keep em coming.

Being a Recessionista.

Today my Tam Pham-licious sent LookRichBitch and me this tip:

On today's show, Oprah and Suze Orman are talking about how people should be using layaway in today's economy!!!!

D, you were totally ahead of the curve last week :-).

Ever modest, I wrote three words back:

I amaze me.

DEAR LORD, whose ass do I have to kiss already to get my trifecta book deal: Diabolina Does Fashion, Diabolina Does Deep Thoughts and newly added, Diabolina Does Money.

Oh and I have been thinking about a children's book lately too. Diabolina Does Kids not such a great title though ;)

Diabolina Digs

Being an In Style Magazine editor.

Now I'm not really an In Style Magazine editor. The closest I've gotten was living with Jean Bean senior year of college. That's when she was an intern at In Style. Meanwhile, I was busy nerding it out with Mr. Diabolina and Sable Crow. Too busy to ponder a career. F.

But when I got the September issue of InStyle I realized that, well, I could have been a contender...

After all, I was covering Gossip Girl fashion back in June. And I hadn't even watched one episode yet.

And I've been chronicling Charlize's fashion moves just as long. Even waxed poetic on her recent fall trend interpretations - mark my words she'll be plastered all over next month's issue in that Prada lace dress. And I will be yawning.

I also did a nice reverie on Narcisco Rodriguez back in early March

Discussed wunderkids Proenza Schouler back in May.

Revealed my girl crush on Margherita Missoni.

Have been digging gladiators since May. Especially when paired with white and on my favorite white girl, Gwynnie.

Leather leggings have been on my mind since February. Finally debuted them last month.

Art prints on the other hand I've been rocking since Spring. Glad to see I can wear this Chloe inspired dress well into Fall. Maybe with some tights and a blazer.

Plaid is a more recent obsession.

Learned it from the Olsens, I'll admit. But I've been on the 90210 bandwagon since they were in diapers (read her quote at the bottom of the page!)

Have been jumping on the floral trend since June.

I wore a similar rose garden of a dress for the Tarina Tarantino Plastic Pink Party.

And a ruffle top and black skirt combo for Chowmein's birthday last month.

Am a big fan of all things ruffled so glad they are in vogue this fall and seemingly into Spring 09.

Have been loving this shot of Eva Mendes since June. And teaching you how to pose skinny since April with the help of Mr. Architect. Shared some of his recent tips last month.

Have been trying to share my belting escapades for months now.

Also been encouraging you to have a Madonna moment like I did for my birthday ;)

Taught you how to tie that indie jaunty scarf look months ago.

And how to rock the right bra too.

And though I haven't done a full denim guide, I talk about jeans alot: skinny ones and straight legged ones by Madewell and weekend ones by Blue Cult and Citizens of Humanity.

Phew! It's positively exhausting just looking back at all the terrific content I've created. In my spare time. For no money :)

But on a serious note, I am really starting to think blogs are the fashion magzines of the future. The immediacy of the internet has fundamentally changed how a new generation of women consumes fashion.

I, for one, didn't learn much of anything new from this recent issue of In Style. But I remember a time when I used to live for my magazines arriving in the mail. Now I just surf the Web (including In Style's excellent Web counterpart) and report my own takes on the trends with the click of a button.

So while I think print is far from dead, I think the Web is going to be critical for its survival. Now how exactly is it that I get in on that action?

Diabolina Digs

Wanting.

I want to feel normal again.
I want to laugh and not feel guilty.

I want to feel like I know what I'm doing.
I want answers. I want solutions.

I want to do the right thing.
Say the right thing. BE the right thing.
For her. For him. For everyone.

I want control.
I'd even take the semblance of control at this point.
Sigh.

And I guess I want shit-kicker booties too ;)
