Diabolina Digs
Yves Saint Laurent Fall 2008 booties

With bare legs

Or with tights

From the front

Or from the back.

I heart these Herman Munster beauties.

AM: Prepped for next week's business trip.
PM: Hit the gym and then watched the Presidential debate online.

While I was happy Obama CLEARLY won, the content of the debate was quite depressing. Between the wars and the economic meltdown, we are in deep doodoo. Marc's window display said it best. George W. Bush=Worst President Ever.

There is so much fear in the air right now, no? It's palpable. I can practically taste it. And I fear that all this fear will make Americans too afraid to vote for change in November. That would be the most frightening outcome of all. Hope I'm way off base on this one...

If you are a fashionista who still hasn't supported the Obama campaign, I encourage you to donate via Runway to Change. Some of today's hottest designers have created affordable andadorable pieces that you can purchase to wear your support loud and proud.

The DVF tote is my fave.

And look cute doing it.

For dinner, Mr. Diabolina and I hit Sonora Cafe. Always delectable. He had their signature pork chop, I had the Cochinita Pibil. Because I am a cochinita. Boo to meals that are NAMED for you.

After dinner, as we waited for the valet, I taught Mr. D how to pose like a fashion blogger. If you don't know, I'm a bit of an anomaly. When I do my daily outfit snapshot, I look at the camera. I don't try to make it look like a candid. I don't get artsy. I actually pose. And - gasp! - I even smile.

I don't scowl. I don't try to look vacant. I don't pretend to be fasinated by my shoes. It's a little thing but an important distinction to me. It's a little like the difference between Lucky and Nylon.

I want my blog to feel real. I want to help make fashion accessible not alienating. I want to create a place for women who are interested in fashion but who have a lot more on their minds than just shoes.

I'm not really interested in being just another fashion blog. God knows there are enough already. I want my writing to make others think and feel. Cry and laugh. Maybe feel inspired. Or understood. Or not alone.

Most of all, I'd like to create a community where women connect - not only with each other but with their own beauty, inner strength and power.

And, call me crazy, but I find it hard to connect when you're looking down at your shoes self-consciously ;)

Rushed to get dressed this evening for dinner. Was a bit discombobulated from listening to the debate and realizing how long it's going to take to undo the damage of the last 8 years. Felt like black was the only appropriate, somber enough choice. Thought black lace might make it look on trend for fall.

Decided to debut this new H&M lace top. Just $30. And unfortunately it kinda looks like it cost $30. The horror.

Buyer beware: Lace is notoriously hard to get right on the cheap. It's one of the fabrics where you really get what you pay for so you should expect to pay top dolla. Wish I had serious cash to drop on this season's Prada. The craftsmanship is exquisite. Especially intoxicating in person.

Tried to salvage the top by luxe-ing it up: added the Armani jacket and the Chanel earrings and purse. Also removed the top's satin sash (BLECH!) and added the pretty F21 belt. Felt like I was performing a surgery where I was trying to stop the bleeding. F.

Thankfully, Mr. D was much more concerned with my hot shoes than with the cheap top.

I think I've created a monster.

The Scene
Back in July, the delicious Daisy Duke's invited us to a fab launch party for S.N.O.B. Style TV, a fashion Web site started by her friend Stylista to the Stars.

Since then Stylista to the Stars and her site have been featured in Star, InStyle and 944 where she was called one of L.A.'s Women of Power. Very exciting!

Sensing we might have a lot in common, Stylista and I decided to get together for cocktails and shop(ping) talk. We have been trying to find the time that worked for both of us since early August. So glad our blogger date worked out tonight.

Stylista is sweet and genuine and driven. Her passion for fashion is infectious. She is willing to work hard and also knows her worth. A combination of traits that seems increasingly rare in twentysomethings. Think we could learn alot from each other. This moment seems filled with possibilities dancing around me. Exciting.

Ended the night watching Towelhead with Mr. Diabolina. It's from the same director behind American Beauty and an infinitely more raw, disturbing look at sex in suburbia. Aaron Eckhart is at his smarmy best. Proved I am not ready to have a teenage child anytime soon if ever. And forget about Mr. D. He couldn't watch several scenes. We're so Catholic.

Was too exhausted last night to plan an outfit. But had something I've been wanting to try in mind. Short dress, chunky sweater and belt.

Pulled together the pieces and decided I wanted to wear the Max Azaria flat boots and Stella bag to make it all a bit more fall. Am kinda obsessed with flat boots at the moment.

Unfortunately the look didn't feel very work appropriate since this F21 dress is soooo short. Definitely more of a weekend look.

Love that Star Stylista wore a version of my original outfit. A frothy dress by Meghan Fabulous ( a close friend of hers and newly on my radar) with rich brown boots. She doesn't have to worry about an office environment. Lucky ducky.

The choice of yellow is further proof we are kindred fashion spirits.

My ultimate outfit came together very naturally. This gray dress is such a stupendous building block.

This week's US Weekly agrees. The color plus the jersey material makes it so easy, perfect for a casual Friday at the office. And the eyelet drapey jacket dresses up the jersey nicely.

The shoes are a newly rediscovered treat. Love the snakeskin. Especially with the especially pink toes.

The watch I never wear anymore but loved how it looked paired with the bracelet.

Very Hermes Medor watch.

With all these pieces in place I felt very Bar Rafali at the MTV awards. Except not perfect :)

Felt something was missing. Felt the look needed a little bit of pop.
A bit of glam.

That's when I thought to add the little sparkly bow belt.

Probably had visions of the aaaamazing Spring 09 Phillip Lim bow belt dancing in the back of my head. Need it NOW!

I did try out this Topshop obi style belt first. Have had it for ages. Since the last time Asian influences were big in fashion. In the early 2000s?

Have had obis on the brain since I saw the Marc Jacobs show last week.

The collection has actually grown on me quite a bit. Reading this LA Times piece probably helped. Now I can appreciate what Marc was trying to say with the hodgepodge of references.

Plus I took a closer look at the accessories. The bags, bracelets and shoes are stunning and original.

To quote a stylist to the stars, I die.

Alarm goes off at 5:30. Get up at 5:45. Out the door by 6. Done with tradeshow set up for work by 7:30.

Since I'm in downtown, treat myself to breakfast at Phillippe's. I mean you can't be near the city's best salsa and not stop by to say hello. With your tongue.

Then decide to wait out the rush hour traffic at USC. On a mission to pick up a simple white polo that Mr. Diabolina wants. He NEVER wants ANY article of clothing. So when he expresses interest in fashion, I seize the opportunity.

See a few other options I'd like for him.

But I don't get them.

Know he will probably wrinkle his nose at my fashion forward picks. Sigh.

Had no intention of getting myself anything though I could easily drop $500 at the USC bookstore any ole time.

But when I see this rare sale sign, I decide a $13 tee won't hurt anybody.

Head into work. Leave the office at 7 p.m. marveling that I am still awake. Decide to stop by a cool store I'd noticed the other day. Just expected to peep in the window since the store was closed. But the owner sees me and beckons me in. I take a look around and fall in love.

She and I chat about her business model and Web site and my blog and online professional expertise. And before I know it she's asking me if I have a card. She's interested in hiring a blogger for her site!!

Don't want to get into details yet. Nothing is certain but this could be a great thing. LOVE that it happened so naturally and unexpectedly. Most great things in life do.

Glad I had this bit of fashion fab news since we had a big football let down tonight. Our Trojans f ed up royally. Against the Beavers of all teams. Again. There goes the #1 ranking. F.

By the third quarter Mr. D (clad in his new polo) is yelling at the TV. By the middle of the fourth he is despondent.

Think he should try to turn that frown upside down and remember Marc's words of wisdom:

Operating on just four hours of sleep this morning. Wanted to keep things simple. But look pulled together for my morning duties.

Decided to do a comfortable flattering F21 dress in a Chanel color pallette. Chanel-ed it up with the shoes and the bag. Easy. Done.

Turning to Chanel for inspiration is a godsend on days when you don't want to think too hard about what you are wearing.

Just do well tailored pieces in black/white or black/beige and you are set to conquer the world and feel beautiful doing it.

Added the trench coat because it was still dark when I left the house.

And because a good trench makes everything you wear a bit more Euro fabulous.

Plus a trench is a great transitional weather piece. Not too heavy. Offers the perfect bit of coverage for day or night as the summer begins to fade away.

Trench coats are also great for going incognito. Feeling like a bit of spy. Which is what I felt like traversing my old stomping grounds today. Was flooded with so many bittersweet memories being at my alma mater. Parked right next to SGM. The psychology building where I spent so much of my bleary eyed freshman and sophomore year mornings.

God, how much has changed and how much remains the same in my life. Like I'm pretty sure my 18 year old self would have looked me up and down today. Soaked in my Chanel and my trench. And thought, that woman is pretty sassy...for being sooooo old :)
