Girl Crush Hall of Fame: Gwyneth Paltrow on Glee

I keep waiting to OD on Gwyneth.

Picnik collage

I keep expecting another fashionable white girl to usurp her in my affections.

I keep wondering when I'll grow weary of her perfectly classic yet just edgy enough style.

But it just doesn't happen.  After 10 years of serious girl crushing, I can't seem to quit her.

And tonight she's guest starring on Glee??? Belting out the clean version of Mr. Diabolina's fave song, "Fuck You"???  Dancing around all old and awkwardly white gurrrl???  Ugh...well it's more than my girl boner can take.

Waaaay too excited for Country Strong now---aka when G met B

Truth be told, B might be the only one who could give G a run for her money.

Video: Johnny Weir and Gwyneth Paltrow Heart Fashion

Johnny Weir is my new imaginary fashion bestie. A Balenciaga tree=the best thing I've learned in a long time. And how cute was he on Rachel Zoe this week?  I wanted to gay bestie propose when he said what kind of man would he be if he didn't know the 90210 episode when Kelly and Brenda show up wearing the same dress to the Spring Fling. Remember my not-so-secret obession with that same storyline???? Love.

And OMG!  Thanks to my oldest imaginary fashion bestie Gwynnie I can't wait to hit Kirna Zabete when I'm in NYC later this month. Doesn't the store look like heaven on earth?  Don't even get me started on the wall o' purses.

The Scene
Cannot express how touched I was that Mr. NBC came out to support Mr. Diabolina yesterday. Especially because Mr. NBC is kinda a big deal professionally himself. I've lost track of just how many times he's been promoted at the peacock network. He's worked on Dateline and the Nightly News; is on a first name basis with Stone and Brian; and has covered everything from Katrina to OJ to Obama. All before the age of 30. Super impressive considering how competitive broadcast journalism is.

Mr. NBC and I met during journalism school at USC. It was his last year of undergrad and my first year of grad school. We became fast friends during an study abroad program we did the summer of 2000 (it's also where I befriended the lovely St. JudE.) In those 6 weeks, we experienced England, France, the Czech Republic, Switzerland. It was both of our first times in Europe.

During the day, we toured the offices of the BBC and Le Monde and Nestle and the International Olympic Committee. At night, we danced at clubs in London, drank wine on the Seine, and partied underneath the Charles bridge. We shopped in Prague and paddle boated near the Swiss Alps. Ugh. It was a magical once-in-a-lifetime trip. So lucky to have shared it with a rockstar like Mr. NBC. I could never have imagined we'd still be so close 8 years later. So thankful we are.

Mr. NBC was promoted yet again recently. UBER proud of him. But sad for L.A. since the new contract has him headed back to NYC. 30 Rock's gain is our loss. Wah. So tonight Sable Crow and I joined him for a last hurrah in Boyztown. Over dinner, we talked about careers,New York v. L.A gays, fashion, the economy and Obama. Mr. NBC says it feels quite cool to now be part of the ruling class ;)

As we toured WeHo tonight, I marveled at how much has changed. Oh sure, you'll still see an occasional delish shirtless waiter but overall the scene has migrated from WeHo to Hollywood. Our college hot spots are now ghost towns. The venerable Abbey was bought by the SBE conglomerate for pete's sake.

Tonight when I saw teenage hags running around with their boys, I felt nostalgic for the carefree days of yesteryear But for the first time in a long time, I didn't want to relive those days. I adore the brilliant beautiful (bespectacled) friends that surround me in this moment. I have gathered them at every step of this journey. And I look forward to the triumphs the next decade will bring all of us.

The Commentary

Yes, another jersey dress. I could live in jersey dresses. Ugh, I think I do live in them. They are just so comfortable and flattering and easy. Very California. Maybe one day I will graduate to ones actually designed by C&C California.

I got today's dress because it reminded me of some color block ones I've seen at Theory lately. Original price $295 now on sale at Shopbop for $149.

But I prefer mine with the drapey neckline. And quite chic for just $25. Versatile too. Works perfectly for work with a jacket or a casual night out.

It matchy matchs perfectly with the Pradas. Per usual, these shoes garnered tons o looks and a couple of comments from strangers tonight. So much so, Mr. NBC decided they are the perfect gaydar barometer. Gays are fundamentally elated by them. Straight men, fundamentally perplexed by them.

We also decided Sable Crow's distressed jacket and fingerless gloves are homo chic.

He wanted them to be hobo chic. But there is nothing hobo about Sable Crow ;)

p.s. The best part of my work day was getting a fantastic blogger-like email from Gwyneth Paltrow aka the GOOPster herself. It focused on her fave LBDs. Now this is such a simple staple for most women to manuever that I wish she'd focused on a fashion lesson with a higher degree of difficulty/ But Gwynnie fans/beggars can't be choosers.

Today's look wasn't too far off from this tulipy sleeveless dress and strappy shoes.

And this simple look was pretty similar

to the look I wore to the recent Saks party.

Adore this look centered around the statement necklace
and peep toes.

This is as close as I've gotten this fall in L.A.'s unseasonably hot weather.

This belting situation is what I was going for

in San Francisco a few months ago but the knit was too chunky - wah.

Um, I NEED THIS LUXE LOOKING UO BELT STAT!!!

And new boots.

The Gucci studded ones I've wanted for months and that Gwynnie has (F!) would be ideal

And - duh - a Chanel dress instead of my go-to Forever 21 LBD would be nice too. Put in a good word for me with Santa, will ya?

The SceneToday at The Office they served BBQ for lunch. I practically made love to the ribs.

Apparently, went a little too nuts. Popped into the restroom a few hours later and looked in the mirror only to find sauce all over my lips. Ugh. What a pig. Miss having friends at work who have my back and tell me when I'm a problem. Sigh.

At least I have real life friends who hook me up on hump days. G (who will from now on be known as Little Miss MBA) and I had plans to meet up for dinner tonight.

As we were finalizing details, she sent me a special promotion coupon for Madewell - all jeans $25. They typically retail for $98-$120. Eureka. I suggest we skip our fancy dinner and instead dine on demin.

Had never heard of Madewell until the last few months. I guess it's a sister brand of J Crew. And lucky for me, one of Little Miss MBA's best friends from childhood works on the corporate team.

We both end up getting two pairs of jeans. Wasn't expecting much but each pair was outstanding on my tush. And my tush is not an easy customer.

The sale section was also brimming with deals. Got these very Marc Jacobs tops. Each for under $15.

Little Miss MBA might just be the most perfect friend. Not only are we twins when it comes to work ethic and sense of humor. But she is invariably supportive and reassuring and swoops in to cheer me up when I'm down in the dumps. And she knows L.A. fashion like no one else. And she takes me to the coolest parties AND hooks me up with the coolest shit.

Not to mention the fact that she is ALWAYS impeccably turned out. Today she is wearing the Marc butterfly print I adore and her new monogrammed Goyard. Ugh. I cannot wait til she rules the world.

The Commentary
No picture today. Mr. Diabolina was asleep when I got home at 10 pm. What an old fart.

Today's nautical look was inspired by Gwyneth. Yes, her smug ass again. Yes, I know I'm not white. Yes, I know that if I love her so much I should just marry her already.

It's just that find her style so clean and feminine. She wears clothes with such ease and grace. And damn near always manages to be on trend without being trendy. Very much what I aim for in my daily looks.

The picture above of Gwynnie at a recent Estee Lauder event is a dream. The ruffles: big for fall 2008. The peep toe shoes: sex on a stick. The killer straight hair: my ideal. The naked face with smoky eyes: my go-to evening makeup. I want. I love. I need.
This recent picture got me thinking about another black and white ensemble of hers that sticks in my head. White pants, striped sweater with a crisp white shirt underneath and a Chanel bag. Oh and a delicious Apple in her hands. So very Upper Eastside Mommy chic.

Gwyneth also seems to favor stripes in her more casual looks.

Not sure why stripes always elevate a basic pair of jeans. But they do. Maybe it's because they conjure Frenchness???

So with visions of Gywnnie dancing in my head this morning, I reached for this nautical Forever 21 top. Then the white pants followed by the black jacket. Summery but still work appropriate.

Then came the Chanel pieces and the Tory Burch gold flats that are on their last legs from overuse. Then the cherry on top of this outfit was the little polka dot headband I slipped on. So adorable. So Blair Waldorf (Am getting the Gossip Girls DVD the minute it comes out next month, btw!)

Got the idea to mix prints (stripes with polka dots) from this recent Rihanna shot. Kinda love it, kinda hate it. But she is so young and gorgeous and on the brink that she can pull it off.

For the rest of us mere mortals, I think just a little mixing of prints will do you.
