The Scene
Wake up at 4:30 am. In the air by 7 a.m.

When she's not dozing off, my momma gorges on the fruit, granola and milk I brought to ensure she wouldn't get fussy.

It's hard traveling with a little baby.

Get into the hotel, do a bit of work and then it's time to do what mommy and me do best on Sundays: food and fashion.

First we head over to The Plaza - the first hotel my mom ever stayed at in New York City. With my dad. About 20 years ago.

In The Oak Room, she has tea while I have bubbly and we split the delish cheese plate - just like last December when Mr. D and I visited NYC.

With our tummies satiated, we move on to devouring fashion.

No better place for that than Fifth Avenue. YAYAYA!

I say hello to all my little friends: Fendi, Prada, Tiffany's

Bottega, Bergdorf, Louis Vuitton.

But it is a new lover that leaves me gaga today: Henri Bendel. Henri Bendel's hair accessories department to be exact. A magical wonderland for girly girlies. It's like Blair Waldorf threw up in there.

I debate getting 20 different headbands but leave the store with not a one. Figure I have 4 more days to shop. Today I just want to get the lay of the land. Don't want to give into the shopping frenzy.

In the evening, it's time to meet up with my beloved Mr. NBC, Texas Cowboy and Jean Bean at Eatery. YAYAYAYY!

Love love love that I get the chance to see friends on this business trip. Makes all the work anxiety disappear for a couple of hours.

Over food so good my mom has to put on her glasses and inspect it, the five of us catch up.

Mostly we discuss our jobs and the current economic mess. We plot our next moves, our futures. Or at least we try to.

Tonight, surrounded by loved ones in the city that never sleeps, I count my blessings. Not only am I gainfully employed, I've developed creative outlets to keep things interesting. Not only do I have a supportive mother, I have amassed an impressive circle of dear friends ;)

Fall asleep smiling. And praying tomorrow goes smoothly. If tomorrow goes smoothly, the rest of the conference will be a piece of cake.

The Commentary

Leggings again today. Love them on long plane rides. Even more comfy than jeans. Especially with the flat boots.

And, according to Net-a-Porter, a must have for spring.

Added the ruffle top because I cannot believe I got it for just $20. This Mint one is $330.

Both a bargain compared to this Fendi. $1060!!!!!!!! Ack!

But this Sonia Rykiel takes the cake at $1545.
Gorgeous but too. damn. much.

Would rather buy a purty ruffle scarf like my mom's. Anthropologie from a few years ago. Less than $40.

Worked so well with her rosette bracelet and Forever 21 fingerless gloves.

While my momma opted for lots of color today, I decided to just bring my black pea coat for this trip.

Think I looked like a real New Yorker today.

Chic layers of elegant black. The perfect utilitarian uniform that transitions from day to night, from plane to shopping to dinner out on the town.

If it weren't for the screaming every time a freezing blast of air would hit me, I'm pretty sure no one would have any idea I was a tourist.

You do look very New York! Tres chic ;)

When I studied in London, I loved it whenever people asked me for directions, because I felt like I looked like I belonged.

I have a question for you about your F21 clothing...

Doesn't it fall apart on you after a few washes? I only have a few pieces that I rarely wear (I work in a retail store, therefore I wear that clothing every day to work.. ugh), but I hear that they are poor quality. On the other hand, a lot of their washing instructions say "hand wash" and "dry clean" (I doubt my friends do that).

So you do you follow those washing instructions and do your F21 clothes hold up?

Fun first day!

I have a mini-bow headband from F21, but I think I want an obnoxious, Blair Waldorf-esque one. Your picture of the pretties in NY aren't helping....
