The Scene
Headed to the South Bay tonight for another performance by Mr. Diabolina's brother. Same theater as last time, different play. This one was called I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. Going into tonight I knew two things: 1) the play was about love and dating and sex and 2) Mr. D's little bro had his shirt off in it.

Oh, and did I mention we were seeing it with his parents and their entire extended family? Needless to say, I sucked down a glass of wine (or three) at dinner and prepared myself for a night of awkward.

Thankfully, the play was wonderful. Just the right mix of hilarious and poignant. I was amazed at how evenly matched the talented ensemble was - not a weak voice or actor among them. Such a rare treat.

And I must admit Mr. D's brother blew. me. away! (That's him in the purple tie wearing Mr. D's face.) Over the past decade, I have seen him perform a handful of times. I've watched him graduate from high school plays to college plays to professional plays.

I have always known he has a beautiful voice. But tonight I saw his range as an actor too. Tonight, he did half a dozen different characters and inhabited each one. Wow.

People's gifts astound me. Make me want to do more, be more, try more. That's the best gift someone else can hand you...

The Commentary
Originally fell for today's dress while shopping for The Modern Type last month. She and I both have a bit of a no-waist problem so I ended up focusing on alot of two tone dresses. They are great at creating the illusion of an impossibly tiny waist. Like this black and mustard BCBG dress that I picked out for her.

Even better shape than this TDF Lanvin look-alike.

I wanted to get this similarly nipped in dress for her. But, unfortunately I could only find it at BCBG stores on sale. And BCBG doesn't allow you to return sale items. No matter how cute you are. So the dress was out of the running for The Modern Type.

Fortunately for me, I found it still on sale a few weeks later. For $94. I beg of you: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FULL PRICE AT BCBG. The sales at the stores recently have been BANANAS.

While shopping for The Modern Type, I would see the same dress full price at a department store while the BCBG store had it up to 70 percent off. You have to be a super smart, responsible shopper nowadays. If you have extra money to spend, I say spend it. Help local businesses. Patronize chains that are offering you the best deals. If you are willing to do the legwork and delay gratification just a bit, you will be handsomely rewarded.

Felt super femme in today's look. It's the shape and the color of the dress with the nubby coat and dainty accessories.

Felt like a cross between Ginnfer in purple

And Kim in ruffles.

Not used to ruffles feeling so sexy

I mean look at how far this top dips!!! NIP SLIP CENTRAL!

Worried that the dress with the double button skirt felt a bit Carol Brady

Crossed with a pirate. Sigh.

Would have helped to pair the look with these Marnis. Ugh. TDF. They will be mine. Oh yes. They will be mine.

Glad to report that the shelf life of this dress will be pretty long. Purple will still be hot hot hot come fall - according to Oscar de La Renta

And Tibi

And Anna Sui.

Might just need to get me some purple pattern tights and rock out the full Carol Brady, 70s vibe ;)

Did you know that Mr. D's brother's girlfriend works at Mr. Monkey's company? Small world!

Love the top of that dress. It reminded me of a more wearable, wallet-friendly version the Bill Blass blouse Blair Waldorf wore to her 18th birthday party.

That red and purple Oscar makes me weep.

I saw that play so long ago I don't remember anything except that Peach's Genna has been in it too.
