The Commentary

Built the outfit around the full skirt today. Polka dots. Again ;)

These are subtle though. You have to look closely to see them. At a glance, it just looks like a print, no? Love!

However, I hesitated when buying the skirt a few years ago. Don't own too many skirts quite this full. Too often I find full skirts + full hips = full ON problem.

But I loved the look of the whole thing. The black and white flower trim at the bottom felt very Chanel. The detail at the waist with the big three purty buttons was delish. The light material felt airy, perfect for California, perfect for twirling. Ultimately, the beauty of the skirt outweighed the risk of looking porky pig in the skirt.

It remains the fullest skirt I own so I always feel a bit off when I wear it. Jump back whenever I see my reflection in it. My eye just isn't trained to this silhouette.

It always conjures thoughts of Charlotte on Sex and the City. It's a look Patricia Field did quite a bit on Kristin Davis. Probably to highlight the actress' tiny waist and the character's rather traditional take on love.

The key to wearing a fuller skirt is to keep the top of the outfit pretty sleek. Think 1950s housewife. It's vital to show off your bust since you're hiding your hips. And the waist is critical. Luckily the high waist of this skirt creates the illusion of one on me. Phew!

Notice the length of the skirt is key too. Anywhere between under the knee and mid calf is ideal that way you show off the thinner part of the leg.

And a heel is ideal. Size 2s can get away with a flat but everyone else needs to elongate. Balance the fullness with height.

Think today's look is very similar to my last polka dot look. Same color palette. Same shoes. Same retro feel.

The big difference is that the Dolce & Gabanna skirt probably retailed for anywhere between $600-$900. I got it as a hand me down from a friend of my mom's.

And the Forever 21 skirt? Just $25. Who is the shizzle ;)

p.s. Similar pretty full skirts on Couture Carrie. She has the most amazing eye candy site ever. Period. The end :)

I'm a fan of the full skirt. It does have it's challenges, which you detail expertly. But it hits the spot when you're in the mood for something girly and that just feels good to wear. I hope you did a few really good spins when you were alone yesterday, just to watch it flair out.

You totally just made my day.
And of course I should have remembered SJP for her love of the full skirted frock - that is absolutely her favorite shape!

I love wearing full skirts. I always feel so glamorous in them. I've seen the monkey in them a couple of times and think she absolutely looks pretty in them.

I love pining my hair up w/ some mile high heels it give it a polished look a la Charlotte.

I'm a fan of the full skirt too! But I had to reign myself in because for awhile, that's all I was buying! Starting to look too much like a 50s housewife!

I ADORE this outfit. So perectly feminine and dainty. Classic and Chic. It's a look I actually have put together often, and it looks great on you!

When I first started wearing full skirts a number of years ago, I felt odd the first couple of times. But now I love them.

I love full skirts! They look absolutely gorgeous with a tucked-in top, like what you did, or with a tucked-in tank and blazer/structured jacket.
And I am loving that necklace - I want to get a Van Cleef & Arpels, but I can only dream...
