The Scene
Ran 3 miles in the morning and then pigged out with my mom in the afternoon.

Un then I tricked her. Tricked her into seeing The Watchmen with me. I'd been dying to watch it since I first saw the trailer months ago. Not even Mr. D poopooing it and bad reviews and a self-indulgent running time of 2 hours and 40 minutes could keep me away.

As I've mentioned before, I have a thing for superheroes. Always have. But it's more than just the costumes, more than just the powerful idea of transformation. I think the painfully nerdy, imaginative little boy in me has always longed to be fearless, to make peace with the anger, loneliness and pain inside. Much like most of the Marvel characters. Also love how superheroes want to make the world a better place but wrestle firsthand with the ugliness at the heart of human nature. Deeeeeep stuff, this comic book/inner child stuff ;)

I am also a bit obessessed with apocalypitic movies - strange I know. Also loves bangs, the color yellow and chisled male physiques - are you feelin' me now?

So movies about hotties with bangs in yellow latex crime fighting and sexing up muscled masked men on the eve of the planet's annihilation?? Sign me up. Me and all the other geeks.

My mom? Not so much. She fell asleep within 10 minutes ;)

The Commentary

Built the outfit around the new tomato top. Just $16.

Love love love the pretty collar. The color on the other hand is not one I naturally gravitate toward. Not sure why.

Maybe it's because I wore red every day between the ages of 6 and 13 as part of my Catholic grammar school's uniform. That definitely maybe has something to do with it.

I also suspect it has something to do with the red blooded Latina stereotype. Seems too obvious as a Latina woman to wear red. Too sexy. Too overt.

To me, red has always seemed a color best suited for fair skinned blonds

Great way for ice queens to heat things up.

But since I've been pushing others to go beyond their comfort zone and experiment with color, I challenged myself to buy the top. Glad I did.

I actually loved how it looked and felt today. Very Lily Allen with the dark straight hair and Chanel.

Interestingly, red accessories don't scare me. In fact had been contemplating getting this Jeffrey Campbell cut out bootie in red for the last few weeks.

Started seeing high end versions of it last week.

On fashionistas

And on the catwalk. Specifically at Dior's Fall 2009 show. Dior always does red beautifully.

And the Fashion District does a flat sandal beautifully. LOVING the new sandals I picked up yesterday.

So Dior with the animal print and the hardware and the gaudiness.

Newsflash: Flat strappy sandals are here to stay for another season so snap up a pair if you didn't last summer. Try here, here or here.

Such a great way to add interest to an easy summer outfit.

You don't have to do ones that are as much of a statement as mine. Leave the animal print to me and Lily.

Funny, I've always thought brunettes with dark features look best in red!

not funny at all, weemo. you are right. they do. that's my point. i've always had blinders on given my personal distaste for the color.

I bought the same top, but in blue. I was wondering what I would wear it with, but your post just inspired me to wear it with my high waisted bgbg skirt. thanks! :)

Love those Jeffrey Campbell booties!

I can't wear red.. I just don't like it on me! You on the other hand look like a delicious tomato.. errr.. that didn't come out right.

I gravitate toward red too! I think it's definitely the Latina in us. Before I even read that, I thought, "It's because she's Latina!" hahaha. I think red is just such a huge part of the art and culture that it is ingrained in us. Either that or it's the fiery red temper - what I like to call my "latitude". :)

Duh. I just realized I read that wrong. Anyway - red looks hot on you. :)

This color is great on you! Glad you dared to try something new. And I'm loving the new shoes.

I first read "self-indulgent run time of 2 hours and 40 minutes" as how long you had run after weeks of saying that you've been skipping exercise and thought that I was going to have to dislike you for being one of those people who can just pick up and do crazy workouts. Glad I don't have to stop reading out of jealousy!

Glad other readers thought the same thing as me - I am blonde and fair, and I have to be super picky to find exactly the right shade of red if I want to wear it - or I look SO washed out...
I really liked this outfit, BTW..
