The Scene

Have you ever IN YOUR LIFE heard of someone breaking a wooden, chunky heel? Well, now you have.

How do I manage to keep doing this??? It's like a gift. The gift of being half woman, half horse. F.

Hobbled around all day on my broken Miu Miu and no one at work was the wiser. If playing off a broken heel ever becomes an Oscar category or Olympic sport, you are looking at the world's best.

After work I went straight to one of the half a dozen shoe repair guys that I have strategically positioned all over town. Per usual, he inspected the damage, horrified by my horse ass. Then he sized me up before saying, "This is a very expensive shoe." They always say that. As if I don't know.

"Yeah, I know," I say impatiently. "How much is it going to be?"

He discretely takes in the leather of my purse and the interlocking C's on my sunglasses and then says "$35."

Ugh I think. And then, without thinking, I blurt out, "What kind of special deal can you give me? Because I have at least two other guys I can take this shoe to tomorrow who will do it for less."

He says he doesn't care what anyone else will charge. BUT, for me, he will lower it down to $25.
Eureka.

Perfect, I say. Thank you, I say. And uh-oh, I think. How did Los Angeles suddenly become Mexico? When did everything become negotiable? No bueno.

On the bright side of things, today right after I dropped my shoes off, I walked a couple of feet and made $25. You see Ana of Stylings and So On and So Forth is a reader who lives in Northern California and took My Super Sweet Style Assesment.

She is interested in a personal shopping trip the next time she comes to town. But in the meantime, she told me she was dying for some of the $33 wrap sweaters I wear all the time.

So I offered to buy and ship them to her for half my hourly rate. Took a picture of the colors available, suggested what would work with her skin tone and discussed sizing all over email. Bought them today and will ship them out to her tomorrow. Easy.

Thinking I could do more of this. For readers in parts of the country with less access to fabulous, affordable options. Maybe I could start an eBay store to streamline payment. Do email me if there's anything I blog about that you are interested in having but can't find...

The best part of this first virtual styling project was getting Ana's mailing address today and realizing she works with a dear friend from grad school. Amazing.

It's either a small small world or there's something very right about what I'm up to lately. I am comforted by both options ;)

The Commentary

Built the outfit around the jacket today.

Would have been amazing with a frothy dress now that it's stopped raining in Southern California.

But in the end, I just copped out and went for pants and a monochromatic top. Done. Simple. Clean. Boring but better than most people at The Office.

Love the buttery color of my jacket. Especially with the dark chocolate.

Wish I had a bag in this color. And a fabulous fur.

So many outstanding furs on the street style blogs right now

Wish I felt less conflicted about fur

Wish I could wear it fearlessly and fiercely. Especially with snakeskin boots.

And the perfect blue clutch.

Alas, for now, I will have to settle for a snakeskin bangle and the perfect blue ring. Both Forever 21. Both under $10.

I've broken a heel like that, though admittedly it was on cobblestones.

You are a great business woman! Truly, you have inspired me. I love that you are styling now. I cannot wait for your own reality TV show. Maybe I could make a cameo.

There's something INCREDIBLY right about what you're doing now... no matter the size of the world.

I'm impressed with your heel-breaking abilities.

I don't feel conflicted about fur at all. I am staunchly against!

i've broken a wooden heel like that before too but mine was unsalvageable. Oh and my dachshunds also managed to eat some fabulous Michael Kors wooden heels. THAT was some serious damage. It's a good thing they are cute.

yes, yes yes, would love if you could score some awesome stuff for me! if you ever come across the fabulous DVF stuff you buy in a size 0 or 2 or any fabulous shoes in a 5, 5.5, I am all over it!! I should give you my number so you can text me whenever you come across stuff. I would so buy it and pay you a commission. :)

I LOVE your outfit today. Very nice.

As for the shoe repair guy...He sounds like an asshole. $35?! And then, miraculously, he goes down to $25?! My shoe guy once gave me a hard time for messing up my shoes. I'm like, I LIVE IN NYC. What else do you expect from all of the potholes, grates, uneven textures, etc.? Anyway, I'm glad you were able to salvage them. I love Miu Mius.

D, EVERYTHING is negotiable. It's just never been as socially acceptable to haggle as it is now. My brother and I have always been KINGS at it. It's a sport. Then we compare notes.

I dropped into a store the other day that said it was going out of business.

Despite this, they still wanted full price for their $1200 leather jacket. I balked.

She offered to lower it 30% on the spot! F. I still left. $800 is no deal on a going out of business leather jacket.

I always manage to break a heel or do something to my shoes. I always haggle.. I got it from my momma.
My husband hates it and always gets embarrased by it but I don't care.

How can you be conflicted about fur!
You know it's cruel. Don't buy it, don't wear it.

I understand being conflicted about fur. I eat meat, wear leather shoes...I don't think there's a difference with fur. None of those animals are treated "fairly" when they're all raised for one purpose. But I believe in moderation and limiting our impact on the environment. If you can wear something just as fab without the fur, then great. Thanks for giving us something to think about.
