The Scene

A few weeks ago, my mom was walking down the street when an old friend she'd lost touch with called her name from inside this store. My mom's friend, Miranda is a genius at hair and she kept us looking beautiful for the better part of the 90s. Back then Miranda worked at a beauty supply store and styled hair in a little salon in the back. Now she owns her very own super sweet store and salon, Modern Beauty Supply & Salon!!! Incredibly happy for her and uber proud of all she's accomplished in a few short years.

Today, I stopped by to say hello and get a trim. For two hours, we gabbed about overcoming fear, motherhood, how to make a Brazilian Blowout last longer, my blogging and her celebrity clientele. We laughed and we cried...as only two Latinas in a hair salon can.

Miranda also took me upstairs and showed me around a little alcove that she's rented out to one of her favorite clients. Next month, her client plans to open a little boutique for men and women perched above Miranda's store/salon. Shopping and a blowout? Brilliant!

Got a special preview of the Fred Segal-esque space and snagged my own VIP invitation to the launch party.

Very excited to watch and learn from a friend turned mogul ;)

The Commentary

What I wore today was completely and utterly secondary to the fact that I HAD THE SWINGY STRAIGHT HAIR I'VE ALWAYS WANTED!!!!!!!!!!!!

Walked around so excited that I feared peeing my pants. Seriously. I was THAT ecstatic.

The flawless hair gave me the confidence to debut the flaw-filled bib necklace I made last weekend. Had planned to only wear it under the cover of night but decided to be fearless, to take the risk that people would laugh at it, laugh at me. If I'm going to start taking big risks, I have to start getting over myself, right?

Much to my delight I got several compliments on my crazy DIY experiment. Mostly at Miranda's store. Always one to notice details, Miranda loooved the fact that I used an old Gucci ribbon on the necklace. Heart her. Maybe her boutique will be the first one to carry my exclusive new line ;)

It may sound silly but the necklace made me feel really empowered all day. Was soooo proud that I created something. Something I've been wanting for so long. Something just the right side of trendy that reflects my personality and cost next to no money but could pass for luxe.

Think the fact that the necklace looks a bit like a breast plate or armor also contributed to the feelings/delusions of empowerment :)

My mom had advised me to wear the necklace with a black crew neck but I think the neutral tank really showcased the necklace well today.

And the bubble and draping always work perfectly with shorts. A god send since I'm not feeling super confident about my middle region as summer approaches.

Regardless of the jiggle, I cannot get enough of shorts lately.

Unlike Net-a-Porter, I'm only interested in shorts that cost under $50. Call me cheap - no me importa.

Rocked the new tribal sandals ah-gain.

Absolute magic with the neutral today.

Currently infatuated with the idea of high heels

Styled with short rompers

Can you imagine a pair of beat up denim shorts with these ruffles?

Or print shorts with these cages? Yum.

Think I'll attempt a longer short with heels for day soon.

But, um, I'll leave the leggings with longer shorts to Katie.

I don't think I'd want to use a public restroom whilst wearing a short romper. I'm not sure I'd know what to do with myself.

Yay to creating something that's totally yours...a necklace and a business and beyond!

Great necklace. I love when a real stand-out item gives a girl confidence.

I don't have short shorts, but I am thinking of getting a (cheap) pair to wear on casual days. I like the idea of heels but the Catholic schoolgirl in me is squeamish about showing too much leg...

Love shorts with heels and flats on others, but my legs just don't cooperate. :/ Ah well, I'll just live vicariously through you!
