Last month, Mr. Diabolina and I celebrated our 12 year anniversary. Yep, we started dating when we were just 6 years old ;)
But seriously, it seems like yesterday that we were those two teenagers, getting to know each other, falling in love, our whole lives ahead of us.
Over the years, I've tried to pinpoint why our relationship has lasted for over a decade. Why we are still so happy, why we survived the rough patches when others didn't, why we were lucky enough to find each other so young, why we didn't have to endure the heartache of dating all the wrong people in our 20s.
In the end, I am left with only one truth: I chose to be with the best person I know. Ask anyone. Mr. Diabolina is the most honest, hard-working, self-less, intelligent, patient, dorky, kind, silly AND pretty man. Don't get me wrong: he is far from perfect. But he will be the first to admit that. He learns from his mistakes, he listens to advice, he strives to be better. He is everything I never knew I needed. He makes me want to be more than I am.
And yet---this is the key---he allows for me. He isn't with some idealized version of me. He sees me for who I actually am, not who he would like me to be. His love, I have learned, is as close to unconditional as it gets. He loves the powerful and talented sides of me just as much as the broken and weak parts.
Another big key to our relationship: we balance each other. He can be rational because I am emotional. I can be too much because he is just enough. He can be the skinny one because I will be the pig that makes a reservation at WP 24 for our anniversary. Sigh.
While Mr. D was mooning over the view
I was all about the Woflgang wolfing.
Another seafod crunchy freebie from WP. It was tasty. But I was still recovering from the duck and dumplings of my life.
And the decadent Kobe beef cheeks for Mr. D
Sausage fried rice for me, I mean, both of us ;)
Followed by more chocolate
This is what I wore to obscure a belly full of anniversary gluttony: YSL bag, McQueen heels, Chanel earrings and a $25 metallic dress from Forever 21 that looks much better in person ;)
