What I Wore to Kardashian Peep: H&M Color Block Dress

The Scene

The day after the Made in NY Awards, Yahoo!'s The Thread interviewed the Kardashians at our Internet Week studios. That meant I needed to be on hand, tweeting and snapping photos.

From the Mayor and Matt Damon to Khloe and Kourtney? All in a day's work. Bananas that this is my job now, right?

 Here I am in a screen shot from the final interview: juggling my computer and phone and huge camera, looking very intense, as if I was launching a rocket or curing cancer. I'm bananas serious about work...even when work isn't serious.



So here are my observations from all the professional peeping I did:
I was struck by just how itty bitty Kourtney was

Also surprising: Khloe is not large. Just tall.

Ugh the scourge of teeny tiny sisters that make you look grande by comparison.
Makes me glad I'm an only child.  

Also striking: Khloe had QUITE the force of nature presence. Very strong energy, even intimidating.

Kourtney was the exact opposite. Very low key. Especially noticeable since there is this palpable Tasmanian-devil-carnival-feeding-frenzy vibe whirling around them, between the handlers and bodyguards and teenage fans bearing flowers. It's a strange strange world they inhabit.

Sadly, the girls were not in my favorite looks the day of the interview. I mean, I get it, their whole schtick is sexy and sexy sells. But I don't care what size you are: looking poured into your outfits isn't haute or hot. And I'm not a big fan of sheen in the day. Or sheer...especially with no bra. I guess I'm turning into an elderly nun.

 Or maybe it was the staggeringly high black Louboutins. Though gorgeous on their own, when paired with short, tight skirts in the middle of the day...they just felt off. It was all a bit too-too for a sweltering day in NYC.

I thought our host Sara Bernard, on the other hand, looked pitch perfect. The sexy but flattering dress in an on trend, summery color paired with the leg-lenghtening nude platforms and the fresh hair and makeup. A+ of the day.

The Commentary

When I'm at a conference it's all about schlepping. I'm running from venue to venue, with a computer and a big camera plus all the regular crap I carry. So the shoes have to be comfortable and the outfit has to move well with me and both have to look professional.

The color block dress was the perfect choice for this HOT child in the city day. Must've been over 90.  It moved and breathed and  managed to look fresh even when I was feeling anything but. The cherry on top: how the colors of the dress worked so perfectly with my funny and fun color blocked computer bag.

At one point as I was snapping shots on my iPhone, Khloe looked right at me. And she definitely gave me the once over. Humph. I guess it's only fair: I was looking her up and down. Duh. She was probably thinking that my dress should be shorter and sandals higher---each by 6 inches.

Moral of the day? When it comes to what you wear while hustling: to each her own ;)

What I Wore to Gracie Mansion: Karta Dress

During my trip to NYC, I was lucky enough to attend the Made in NY Awards

That's the Mayor's digs for those of you who don't know/aren't society wannabes like moi.

Bloomberg's Made in NY award winners this year? Um, Matt Damon, the Foursquare founders and NBC's President of NBC Universal Women and Lifestyle Entertainment Networks, Lauren Zalaznick.

Which meant there were Bravo stars galore in the house!!!!

Let me tell you, I felt like I'd died and gone to NYC royalty heaven.

The reason I was there? This lovely lady, Rachel Sterne. She works for the Mayor as NYC's Chief Digital Officer.  It's the first role of its kind internationally and I've been keeping a close eye on her accomplishments since she took office in January.

Since I was in town for Internet Week, I decided to request an interview with Rachel for my work blog. Her press people not only granted me the interview, they also invited me to the mansion for the awards. Double score of all time.

Actually it was a triple score: my bff from grad school Mr. NBC finagled an invite of his own to the event.

Having a partner in crime who is as excited/silly/ghetto as you is key at BFD events.

We could get used to NYC nights like these :)

I first declared my love for Karta waaaaay back in 2008 when I started blogging.  

It's taken me a few years but I finally scored a little retro, ornate beauty of my own. Found it resale for over 70 percent off retail at Wasteland in Santa Monica. Though the dress came out in 2007, I think it's a timeless LBD with a twist. Best of all it's uber flattering through the middle for me AND draws attention to the girls in a chic way.  It's the ultimate work appropriate dress that transitions easily into evening. Worth every penny.

Definitely gave Mr. Damon a debonair run for his money.

And though I wanted to lick Matt from head to toe, I was actually more starstruck by the Foursquare guys.

Do you know that they came up with the location services company in their apartment in the East Village? Super inspiring for this nerd.

My friends and I have to get crackalackin and come up with our million dollar digital idea already.

My Sneak Preview of Marc by Marc Jacobs Resort 2012

The last three weeks have been a whirlwind.
But the best fashion story involved two of my favorite M's: Marc and my mama.

During my two weeks in NYC, I reached out to the pretty kitty I know who works at Marc Jacobs and gave me that fantastical tour of the MJ offices last October.

I asked her (read: shamelsessly begged) for another tour. This time for my momma who may be tiny but is an even bigger MJ fan than me.  

My friend said the Soho offices were being remodeled...BUT she'd love to walk us through the temporary Milk Studios space they had for resort. Best.friend.of.a.friend.EVER!

So bright and early one morning, this lucky ducky and her MJ loving mama got to paw through all the latest lovely looks from Mr. CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award himself. This season's storyline: the Marc girl goes to Miami. That means punchy colors, tropical prints and a little more glitz than usual.

Particularly wearable: all the LBDs with a twist

My mom couldn't keep her paws off the great outwear.

But her favorites of the day? The sensible, sassy shoes. My mom practically lives in MJ shoes. Actually, we were both wearing MJ shoes that day to huff around NYC.

As a card-carrying techie, I was giddy to see how much the tech gear line has expanded in just a couple of seasons. So many options to get my geek gadgetery on. LOVE!

But truth be told, the more tradtional totes were my favorites of the day. The prints and the color blocking and the teeny tiny key chains. I NEED EM ALL!

Proud as a peacock that her vintage Marc top fit right in with the newest looks in the showroom.

The only thing missing in both our MJ wardrobes? The perfect polka dotted purse.

Too bad for her Mother's Day just passed...and my birthday is the next major holiday ;)
